The Connection Between Life Purpose and Fulfillment

As human beings, we are the guardians of life on planet Earth because we are capable of things that are completely outside the realm of possibility for the other forms of life on this planet. Since we are at the top of the pecking order of life, we also have needs and requirements that most other animals do not.

While we share most of the same requirements for life that everything else does such as oxygen, nourishment, water and shelter, the human mind requires a sense of purpose in order to be truly whole. We need more than the basic resources to keep us alive. It would be relatively easy to assume that these extra needs are a new concept and that our ancient ancestors were just here to try and stay alive with all the other animals. However, this is far from the truth.

When taking a look at the unique pieces of art that ancient man left behind on cave walls, the marvelous structures that were constructed using methods that we still do not fully understand such as the pyramids, to the almost universal concept of religion in every ancient culture, it is clear that human beings have always longed for a sense of purpose.

Another concept that is perpetually linked with purpose is the desire for fulfillment. Our inherent nature includes the need to feel as if we are valuable and needed in our own personal surroundings.

We like to receive recognition from people around us when we fulfill a need or possess a certain skill or talent. Given that we are an incredibly social species, we require living amongst groups of other people in order to feel whole. This concept is as true today as it was ten thousand years ago.

Unfortunately, many people are going through their daily lives without a definite purpose. This way of living is extremely detrimental to quality of life and, unsurprisingly, the sense of fulfillment received from the things that these individuals do every day.

In some way, a human being that is existing without any sense of purpose or passion that makes them excited at the start of each day is not entirely different from the way much simpler forms of life spend their existence, only waking up to get enough food and resources to remain alive for another day.

The sad thing about people that are living this way is that often times they are unaware of this predicament. While they can certainly sense that something is missing from their lives, they fail to realize that this “something” is the absence of a purpose-driven outlook on life. What is even more unfortunate is that lots of people remain in this state for their entire life, never experiencing true fulfillment.

If you are at a point in your life where you feel like every day is just another monotonous cycle that is repeating itself perpetually, you absolutely must shake this notion.

After all, our time here is a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things. It does not matter who you are, how you view your environment or your sense of self-worth, you have a purpose that is meant for you. It is not until you find what this purpose is and muster the courage to pursue it that you gain a true feeling of fulfillment.

Whatever it takes, do not let your time slip away doing things that may not hold your attention or excite you.
